While most Americans agree that Muslims are entitled to build religious buildings where they choose, the word mosque often summons up images of an exotic edifice with minarets at its corners, filled with ecstatic worshipers ready to wage jihad on the American sons of Satan. "The almost exclusively negative media coverage of Muslims and the lack of accurate information and resources on the Islamic faith feed into stereotypes and dangerous generalizations," the Gallup pollsters concluded. This isn't a novel scenario. Whenever a new ethnic group practicing an apparently exotic religion enters the American body politic, there are suspicions that its houses of worship are in fact nests of treasonous plots and deviant activities. In the 1830s, Protestant residents of the East Coast reacted to an influx of Irish Catholics with much more fear and violence than we're seeing in today's reaction to Middle Eastern Muslims. Catholic domestics were dismissed in droves as rumors circulated that the pope was about to launch his own deadly jihad by commanding that Protestants' dinners be poisoned. Catholic priests were described as ready to commit "impiety, immorality, falsehood, frauds in business, perjury, theft, murder, infanticide and regicide" in the name of the faith. They were said to be using nuns as sex slaves, murdering the babies that resulted, and hiding the bodies in secret cellars. read more |

After being denied official construction permission back home, Muslim Ethiopians in the United States built the First Hijrah mosque and community center to commemorate the first immigration in the history of Islam and counter discriminatory practices by the Ethiopian government.
The First Hijrah mosque, literally meaning the mosque of the first immigration, is located in Washington, D.C., almost two miles from the White House. " It is extremely ironic that in Washington we are granted our rights while this is not the case in our homeland "Mosque muzzein Moftah Saeid The name of the mosque refers to the immigration in year 615 of a group of the prophet's followers, the first to enter Islam, to the northern Ethiopian city of Axum, seeking refuge from the persecution of the Quraish tribe in Mecca.
They lived there under the protection of the Christian Emperor Ashama ibn Abjar, also called al-Najashi, who denied Quraish's request to hand the refugees.
To commemorate the first immigration in the history of Islam, Muslims in the city of Axum tried to build their own mosque and were denied permission by the Ethiopian authorities. read more | Watch Video here |

Dr. Aslam Abdullah We are in the second 10 days of Ramadan, the days of Maghfirah. Our Prophet said that the first ten days of Ramadan are the days of mercy, the next days are the days of maghfirah (forgiveness) and the last ten days are the days of atonement and saving us from hell. We need Maghfirah, which literally means protection and forgiveness. During this month the Muslim community in the United States has come under severe attack from Islamophobes who are making Islam and Muslims an easy scapegoat for their frustration and anger over the election of a black president, depleting economy and rising unemployment as well as declining income. Muslims as usual are divided and unable to respond in a unified manner. Interfaith Councils all over the country have taken a unified stand as is evident from their statements in New York, California and Nevada. However, Muslim organizations have yet to meet and discuss the ways and means to take a unified stand on the issue to counter hate-Islam campaign led primarily by the Christian evangelical fanatics, media madmen, Zionist extremists and political opportunists such as Newt Gingrich and Sarah Palin. Thus, Muslims are exposed to far bigger dangers. Of course, in all circumstances We ask Allah to protect us and show us the guidance to take a better course of action. |
